Turkestan’s new stage kicks off with the presentation of a set of groundbreaking designs for kilims: Banneh, Noor and Kiasar.
Although they might seem revolutionary to the Western world, these designs have been documented in the Mazandaran region, in the north of Iran, for more than five hundred years. Over the centuries, the women have woven narrow strips of kilims that they then combine creatively to serve a host of different purposes as blankets, carpets, curtains and clothes.
What makes these kilims so original is the visual strength of their abstract and minimalistic designs, which evoke Western contemporary art, music and architecture.
