Turkestan’s new collection, which we named Grana, constitutes a new concept in our product line: these carpets were designed by Zollanvari International and NOV24. Like the rest of our carpets, these pieces are handmade and all the procedures and products that take part in the manufacturing process are natural and environmentally friendly. At Turkestan we are really excited to be premiering this carpet design exhibition here in Barcelona.
Grana is inspired in the pomegranate fruit and all the conceptual environment that surrounds it: the fruit and it’s internal grainy structure, but also the pomegranate tree and the immense crops around the country. Grana’s creative team states that the collection’s concept is connected with their childhood memories in Iran, where the pomegranate fields are common. The freshness of the fruits and the delightful shades of the trees blend together in this carpet collection’s design in the form of sinuous shapes and colours.
Pomegranates are very special fruits in present day Iranian culture, both from the cultural and the traditional perspective. Firstly, because of its internal composition and its appearance and colours, pomegranates have been associated with abundance and fertility, and play a prevailing role in weddings as a prosperity augury. Moreover, in Autumn, during the pomegranate season, in the cities one can come across street stands selling pomegranate juice or ice-creams.
Grana collection has four models in wool and silk: Anar Dar Sabad, ‘pomegranates in a basket’; Anar Dar Toor, ‘pomegranates in a net’; Shakhe Anar Poshte Panjere, ‘pomegranate-tree branches behind a window’; and, Derakhte Anar, ‘pomegranate tree’.
